Today we will do an investigation to understand how molecules of different substances can come together and release energy.

A chemical reaction is when substances come together, react, and CHANGE to become new, different substances.

We call this a chemical change. A chemical change cannot be undone or reversed.

Which is an example of chemical reactions or chemical changes?

Burning wood
Ice melting
Baking a cake
Cooking an egg
Cutting a piece of wood
Dissolving salt in water
Butter melting on toast
Fizzing soda
Clay molded into a new shape
Rust forms on a nail

When you have a chemical reaction, the substances that go into the reaction are called REACTANTS.
The substances that come out of the reaction are called products.
